"Take a moment to really appreciate all that you have accomplished."
Written by A Dear Black Woman
Beloved~
I received some poignant life advice during an anatomy dissection of all things. My professor simply told us not to live life from obstacle to obstacle; that life is what happens in between.
How often do we romanticize a life that happens “once”? Once I get into grad school things will be great; once I graduate I’ll be able take better care of myself; once I get that dream job I won’t have as many worries. We put our happiness on the back burner for a theoretical time and place of rainbows and unicorns. But lest we forget, there was a time where the here and now was our “once”. So take charge of your happiness now. Only fairytales should start with “Once upon a time…”.
Take a moment to really appreciate all that you have accomplished. Revel in each step of your process, regardless of how trivial it may seem. Each moment of life has propelled you forward and brought you here. Remember, just because something comes easy to you doesn’t make it less of an accomplishment.
Your gifts are not to be downplayed, nor are your weaknesses to be magnified. The most tried and true way to lose anything is to take it for granted and your talents are no different. So celebrate yourself! You’ve accomplished so much and overcome just as much. Don’t let your life become a CV; maintain your perspective so that you remember it’s a rich tapestry of moments, feelings and experiences that have helped shape you and manifest your Black Girl Magic. Above all, take some time to relish in the in between.
With Love,
Me ☺
