When We See Us.
Ava DuVernay and The Exonerated 5.
Ava "She Really Really Really Loves Us" DuVernay!

I said AVA. SHE REALLY REALLY REALLY LOVES US. DUVERNAY.

It was just 15 years ago, at the age of 32, that Ava first picked up a camera. Since then, she has focused her creatives forces on us and birthed 10 pieces of art that have been powerful reflections of who we are when we see us.

Case in point: Ava's world renown Netflix miniseries "When They See Us" has amplified the voices of "The Exonerated 5", shattering the walls of racism, classism and all manner of f!ckery surrounding our brothers. Yet of all of Ava's achievements, what we love most is her tireless effort to widen the possibilities of how we see ourselves.

Her latest project takes that to another level. And she's not alone.

In Newsletter #57, we (re)introduce you, to 3 Black women photographers and artists who center us in their frame. And what a sight to see.
Plus, we tell you how to book them. When you do, let them know that Dear Black Women sent you.

To the beauty we behold when we see us,

Flo
Founder, Dear Black Women

Affirmation Letter of the Week.
by Monti, Dear Black Woman, Detroit

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Do you see the woman that you are or the woman that you want to be? Do you see what society tells you to be?

You are the woman that you are and who you are striving to be! The strong Black woman who isn’t afraid to put the world on your back, but also understand that when you need to put the world down and tend to yourself, you will.

You are beautiful from the kinks in your hair, melanin in your skin to the mental strength you create to maneuver through this world! The world tries to...continue.
